Phosphorous Supply to a Eutrophic Artificial Lake: Sedimentary versus Groundwater Sources

چکیده
The eutrophic Lake Eichbaumsee, a ~1 km long and 280 m wide (maximum water depth 16 m) dredging lake southeast of Hamburg (Germany), has been treated for quality improvements using various techniques (i.e., aeration plants, removal dissolved phosphorous by aluminum precipitation, Bentophos® (Phoslock Environmental Technologies, Sydney, Australia), adsorption) during the past ~15 years. Despite these treatments, no long-term improvement observed content continued to increase e.g., ~670 kg between autumn 2014 2019. As creeks or rivers drain into hydrological groundwater models do not suggest any major discharge lake, sources (and other nutrients) are unknown. We investigated fluxes from sediment pore in body lake. Sediment was extracted cores recovered divers August 2018 February Diffusive were calculated based on phosphorus gradients. Stable isotopes (δ2H, δ18O) measured water, interstitial waters banks surrounding Elbe River, three wells close isotope mass balance used compute inflow/outflow to/from Our results revealed pore-water borne 0.2 mg/m2/d 1.9 mg/m2/d. Assuming that temporarily spatially representative whole about 11 kg/a 110 is released sediments. This amount lower than ~344 April November 2018. Water stable compositions indicate exchange an aquifer water. Based balances we estimated inflow ~150 ~390 kg/a. result suggests groundwater-borne significant source Eichbaumsee highlights importance balances.

An Input/ Output Flux Model of Total Phosphorous in Lake Edku, a Northern Eutrophic Nile Delta Lake
Previous studies conducted on the hydrography, chemical and biological characteristics of Lake Edku; one of the northern Nile Delta Lakes, concluded that this lake suffered from a high level of eutrophication, due to the heavy load of nutrients, especially phosphorus. Before deciding what type of treatment should be used for decreasing total phosphorous (TP), knowledge of the sources and sinks ...
متن کاملTemperature and Cyanobacterial Bloom Biomass Influence Phosphorous Cycling in Eutrophic Lake Sediments
Cyanobacterial blooms frequently occur in freshwater lakes, subsequently, substantial amounts of decaying cyanobacterial bloom biomass (CBB) settles onto the lake sediments where anaerobic mineralization reactions prevail. Coupled Fe/S cycling processes can influence the mobilization of phosphorus (P) in sediments, with high releases often resulting in eutrophication. To better understand eutro...
متن کاملDenitrification by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in a eutrophic lake
Understanding the mechanistic controls of microbial denitrification is of central importance to both environmental microbiology and ecosystem ecology. Loss of nitrate (NO3) is often attributed to carbon-driven (heterotrophic) denitrification. However, denitrification can also be coupled to sulfur (S) oxidation by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria. In the present study, we used an in situ stable is...
متن کاملSeasonal changes in icefish diel feeding patterns in Lake Chaohu, a large shallow eutrophic lake of China
Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and...
